How It Works

Build a Relay Team
A team of five runners will cover the entire 26.2 mile distance. Each runner will run one leg of 3-7 miles handing off a timing chip to the next team member at a relay-exchange zone. For example, the first runner may run 3 miles to the first exchange zone. That runner will hand off to the second team member who may run 5 miles, and so on.

The team can have as few as three members competing. However, this will require that some team members run more than one leg. For example, if a team has only three members, the first runner may run the first two legs of the relay, the second runner may run the next two, while the third runner runs the final distance to the finish line. If a team has four members, one member must run two legs of the relay.

This year, there are several different entry categories for relay team. They include:

• Corporate/Business 500 or more employees
• Corporate/Business 100-499 employees
• Corporate/Business 99 or less employees
• Open (almost anything goes) Male/Female/Mixed
• Masters – Male/Female/Mixed (Age 40 and older)
• Universities/Colleges – Professors, Staff, Administrators, Students
• Armed Services/Police/Border Patrol/Fire
• Legal/Medical

Numbers and Timing Chip
Team members must wear a number visible on their front. Team members must also wear a "RELAY" bib on their back.

The last runner of each team must wear the timing chip for scoring the overall team finishing time.

Relay Exchange Zone Operations
Corrals will be at each exchange point. These corrals will be set up by team race numbers and all team members must remain in or behind the corrals until their team member arrives at the exchange zone. RELAY TEAM MEMBERS MUST KEEP THE EXCHANGE ZONES AND THE MARATHON COURSE CLEAR.

There will be shuttle buses to all relay exchanges zones except relay exchange #2 start of leg #3 (Washington Blvd. @ Michigan). Exchange # 2 is less than 1/4 mile from the start and finish of the marathon. Exchange # 2 will be accessible by car or foot on the morning of the race and there will be ample parking for a nominal fee. pdf Click on the link to see a walking map to the exchange from the start and pdf click on the link to see a walking map to the finish. Also there will be a tent at exchange # 2 to act as shelter for the relay runners. It is highly recommended that teams use the shuttle buses especially going to and from Windsor, Canada. The shuttle buses will be located on Michigan Avenue @ Washington Blvd., directly south of the start lines. You MUST have a race number on and it MUST be Visible. If you do not have a number you will not be allowed on the bus. THIS IS A REQUIREMENT OF THE BUREAU OF CUSTOMS AND BORDER PROTECTION.

Boarding the shuttle buses begins at 5:55 a.m. The shuttle buses will depart for the relay exchange zones at 6:50 a.m. SHARP. If you miss the shuttle bus, you will be responsible for your own transportation to your assigned relay exchange zone

Numbering of Relay Exchange buses:
Buses 1-9 to exchange # 1 start of leg # 2
Buses 10-18 to exchange # 3 start of leg # 4

Returning relay runners to the finish line:
Shuttle buses will return to the finish with relay runners who have completed their leg once the bus is full (or the last relay runner has completed the leg). Returning relay runners will be dropped of at Bates and Cadillac SQ. Relay runners should then walk one (1) block north on Bates to Farmer. The entrance to the marathon finish area (parking lot) is located on the north west side of Bates @ Farmer. pdf Click on this link to see map of the marathon finisher area and relay bus drop off location.

NEW: NO RELAY RUN-IN AT THE FINISH
Runner safety and security prevent a team run-in at the finish. Therefore the last leg of the relay is the GLORY LEG to be run by one member of the team. Failure to comply could result in team disqualification. Relay teams will be able to meet at the finish for their reunion and team photos.

Sweats and personal items:
The Marathon will not be responsible for the movement of sweats or personal items of relay runners. It is up to each team to figure out how to pass on sweats and personal items. DO NOT LEAVE PERSONAL ITEMS AT THE RELAY EXCHANGES, WE HAVE NO WAY OF INSURING THEIR SECURITY AND WILL NOT ASSUME ANY LIABILITY

Relay shuttle buses as shelter:
The relay shuttle buses will remain at the relay exchange points (except for exchange # 2 there will be a tent) to act as shelter for the relay runners. You may remain on the bus until it is time for you to exchange with your team member and run your leg. There will also be port-a-johns at each relay exchange along with water and Gatorade.
